In early 1951, with only two Valley coin operated pool tables, Alexander Saffron Jr. established his first pool table business: Al's Pool Games. The tables were leased to the New Casino Beer Garden on E. Davison in Detroit, Michigan--still a client to this day. As Alexander's business grew, he added pinball, bowling and gumball machines to his lease inventory as well. Alexander also decided to buy, sell and service used pool tables. He was particularly fond of vintage Brunswick tables and began restoring them to new condition.
Sometime in late 1964, through a chance meeting with the Brunswick area sales rep, Alexander learned that Brunswick was seeking someone who was reliable and knowledgeable about their products. Alexander was the natural choice because of his winning personality and integrity (anyone who knew him would tell you so), not to mention his ability to repair and install the products to Brunswick's satisfaction.

Following this very humble beginning, Alexander and Brunswick celebrated the grand opening of Saffron's Billiard Supply at 814 W. 11 Mile Road in Royal Oak, Michigan on January 1, 1966. In addition to carrying Valley pool tables, the next year (1967) Saffron acquired the franchise for Fischer Pool Tables. Many more franchise brands were added in later years, including Gandy, Playmaster, Peter Vitale, Golden West World of Leisure, Irving Kaye and Olhausen. Alexander also established a joint venture with Lancer Mfg. At the same time, Saffron's offered their own brand of custom made, furniture grade pool tables.

Through his faith, family and leadership, Saffron's Billiard Supply became a top 5 retailer of quality pool tables in the world. This milestone was achieved in 1973 and maintained until his passing in 1984. His children operated Saffron's Billiard Supply until closing retail operations in 2002. Alexander's son David and his grandsons Alexander III, Andrew and Todd continue to this day selling, servicing and restoring fine antique pool tables. We re-cover and move pool tables, install new cushions and build one-of-a-kind custom pool tables.
